********************************************************************
"Who are your customers?"
"Who will buy your products?"
Are you assuming that everyone will buy
from you?
I won't be surprised if you think that way.
What people forget is that while the number
of people who will buy any product or any
service is almost limitless, the number of
people who are interested in and want to
buy your product and/or service is limited -
very limited.
While the "shotgun" approach to marketing
is not a bad idea it takes a lot more work
because you're selling to people who are
not even looking for your product because
they have no need for it - perceived or actual.
What you need to do is to target your marketing
efforts to those people you think are most
likely to buy your product and/or service.
This means identifying and serving a particular
customer group.
You need to step away from the "shotgun"
approach and refine your product and/or
service in such a way that it's not a Swiss
army knife of all products and/or services for
all people.
After you've identified that market you then
proceed to create, price, distribute, promote,
and position your product and/or services
accordingly.
You also need to continually improve your
product and/or service so that it becomes
easier, more successful, and more cost-
effective.
Understand what the the reasons and motivations
of the people purchasing from you are.
"What needs to they need satisfied?"
"What problems do they want solved?"
Match your product and/or service accordingly.
Paint a picture of your target buyer using the
demographic breakdowns below:
- Gender: male or female
- Age: young, middle aged or elderly
- Education: secondary, college, post-bac
- Marital Status: single, married or divorced
- Income Level: low, medium or high
Once you've figured out who your buyers
are and what problems or concerns they
want solved focus your marketing strategy
to attract them so they buy from you.
The advantage of targeting your market versus
the "shotgun" approach is that you know
that the people in that market is out looking
for your product and/or service so it doesn't
take a lot of your time and resources to convince
them to buy.
They are already inclined to do so, it's just
a matter of convincing them that it's your
product that's worth buying versus those of
your competitors.
Give your market research on your target
market a boost.
