SInce they are big they can afford to. As a
starter, you don't have the resources to have

By that I mean that they should share a
common subject so that there is continuity
in the providing of service and information
to your target traffic.
Exchanging links can also boosts your
chances of ranked high in search engine

This is because search engines ranks sites
that have a lot of inbound and outbound theme-
related links.
That's why I said earlier you need to link
with same subject sites because search
engines would disregard ranking the traffic
you get if the link is not with a related site.
Of course it becomes a cycle wherein the
more links you have the more traffic you
get which ranks you higher in search engine
results giving you more visibility driving not
only traffic but other sites who would like
to link with you and so on and so forth.

To save costs you can write the articles

but if you're just starting out it's wiser and

If you can write something that you have
either knowledge or the expertise in so that
