It is so true, the money is
indeed in the list.
Because having your own list
means having your very own
customer base that no one
else has.
In fact, you've probably heard
of the many success stories
of people who have made a
lot of money because they
have their own huge list of
subscribers.
Email marketing techniques
such as email newsletters,
announcements, promotions,
or broadcasts, are a cheap
way to get to your prospects
and potential customers
with your message.
Not only do you NOT pay
for printing or postage,
unlike direct mail, but you
also get to see results
almost immediately.
But if you're just starting
out, how do you make
your own list?
Let me give you some ideas
for that.

Offer a free newsletter
Giving out free information
is one of the more effective
ways to build an opt-in
email list.
Not only are you giving the
people that you are targeting
information, you are also
building rapport and trust
with them.
To that end, when you are
creating your own newsletter,
make sure that it has a lot
of useful information that
the readers can use.
That being said, make sure
that the your newsletter
content is not just useful
but also relevant.
Of what use is an article if the
event for which the information
was needed has already
passed.
Remember, old news is
bad news.
Also, make it exude your own
personality. Don't make it too
formal because that's what
brick and mortar newspapers
do.
You want to be able to reach
your potential customers at
a more basic and personal
level.
Make it fun and lively so that
your readers would like to
subscribe so they can get
to read more of you.
Advertise in forums
There are a lot of forums and
discussion boards online.
Join one or a few that are
related to what your are
selling or offering, or what
your site is about.
Establish your name in the
forum as a person that people
there can go to if they want
something answered or if
they need help in something.
This way you can establish
trust AND credibility.
That way once the forum
allows you to advertise
your site, people will go
to it because they want
to be part of your list.
(Now I say allow you to
advertise because some
forums does not allow
such things.
So read their policy first
before you join because
if they don't allow you to
post your link or advertise
your site it defeats the
purpose of joining)
Create a product to give
away
Everyone loves to get free
stuff. You know it and they
know it.
So why not create a product
that you can give away to
people who opt-in to your
email list.
A short e-book or something
of the sort.
But make sure that it is
something that people can
use because you will simply
build a bad reputation if you
create a product to give away
only for the purpose of giving
it away.
Remember, even if you are
doing that, you still need to
maintain your credibility.
Team up with
complementary sites
By doing that it will allow your
subscriber list to grow.
And by cross promoting each
other's site, you also get the
added bonus of setting up
your network so that in the
future should you need or
want a joint-venture partner
you don't have far to look.

When promoting your opt-in
subscription, make it easy
for people to subscribe.
More importantly, make sure
you tell them what they are
getting themselves into.
Lying so that they opt-in is
not a good idea because
they will not only unsubscribe
but they will also give you a
bad reputation.
And don't even think of not
putting in an unsubscribe link
because that will not work.
Sure you keep people longer
but they can just complain to
the FTC or to the Search
Engines or Internet service
providers and "boom" your
site is either de-listed or
your IP address is gone
(potentially).
You don't want that to happen
so DON'T DO IT.
Building your profitable list
is not instantaneous. It takes
time to build up, that is if you
want a loyal list that is very
active.
Content is key, and so is the
personality of your site.
If people like it they will stay.
