Hi Menno,
I entered internet marketing
just recently and thought I'd
try being an affiliate first
before going out on my own.
I figured I could make money
that way until I set up my
own products.
I chose products to sell as
an affiliate that I thought
would do well but it wasn't
as I expected it to be.
I mean the products are
popular and it seems
everyone would want them
but I'm just not making
any sales.
Could you advise what I'm
doing wrong and what I
should be doing?
Thanks,
Gary
************************************************************
Ok let me start by saying this:
it's not wrong thinking about
going into affiliate marketing.
It is, after all, one way to earn
some money without having
to go through the process
of creating a product and
hoping it sells.
The product is there. And
so is the market. So you
get a sale.
Wrong!
Unfortunately, it's not as
easy as it may seem.
There are shortcomings
when it comes to affiliate
marketing.
Nay, actually there are short-
comings when it comes to
internet marketing period.
What is it you ask?
Simple. The market itself.
The thing is many internet
marketers think that just
because they have a
product they will have
a market.
That's the wrong approach.
Many make the mistake of
targeting a very large market
offering a variety of products
to different sets of people.
The shotgun approach isn't
bad but you have to remember
one thing: you're not the only
one who has thought of
doing that.
It's human nature to go with
what's hot. That means if
one product is the "in" thing
then everyone wants to get
in on the action.
You said it yourself, the
products you chose were
popular and there was a
market for them that's why
you chose them.
You and probably a million
others.
A good strategy to use in
order to get over this problem
is to focus on niche marketing.
What is niche marketing?
Basically it's focusing on a
certain segment of the
market and targeting the
customers there with
products that fit that
segment.
Let's me put it this way.
Pretend the market is for
fruit. Now you could try
and cover the whole area
by selling one of each but
that may result in you over
extending yourself.
At the same time you'll be
competing with other fruit
vendors.
Now imagine focusing on
a segment of the fruit market,
say bananas.
Basically you sell only
bananas to people who
want bananas.
That, in it's simplest terms
is what niche marketing is
all about.
And why should you go into
niche marketing?
Let me count the ways.
************************************************************
You're not struggling
against a myriad of
other marketers
Since you have your own little
corner of the market, you will
only be in competition with
those that are in there with
you.
Instead of going up against
hundreds if not thousands
of other merchants, you
may wind up going up
against 50 or a hundred.
You won't disappear into
the crowd.
************************************************************
Focus your resources in
one place
Since you know your market
you can maximize your
marketing budget so you
can sell your product to
your potential customers.
You can make sure your
content fits right into your
niche.
This will result in your site
being optimized for search
engines so people in your
niche who want to look for
you will find you.
************************************************************
Create products/services
that appeal to your niche
Since you know what you
segment of the market is
and what the customer
base there wants, you
can create products
that has appeal to
them.
You can make your site help
customers with things that
are specific to your segment
of the market.
And once you are able to give
your customers what they
are looking for you are already
one jump ahead of the
competition in terms of
making yourself the
undisputed authority
in your niche.
************************************************************
It's the same wheel, only
differently
The best part is, once you
have a niche you don't really
have to create a product from
out of the blue.
There's no need.
You can simply make one
product even better and
there you go.
The wheel is still a wheel.
It's just that you have your
own specific touches to it.
************************************************************
One of the things you have to
remember is that you won't
get a broad range of
customers in whatever
niche market you go into.
Be that as it may, they are
probably the more loyal
customers you can find
anywhere, especially if
they see that you are
offering what they're
looking for.
It's all bout the market
research. Information is
key so you don't go on
aimlessly in search for
your profitable niche.
