If you have created your very
own product, you will now
have to create your very own
website in order to expose
your product to your market.
Whether you are creating your
website by yourself or paying
someone else to do it for you,
you certainly want to present
all your information in a clear
and accessible manner.
After all, you want to provide
your visitors with a pleasant
experience when they visit
your site.
Furthermore, the look, feel,
design and content of your
web page says something
about you.
One of the first things you
have to remember when
you are designing your
site and planning the
content is keeping your
audience in mind.
Having a great good looking
website is all well and good
but if it can only be 100%
appreciated by people with
ultra fast internet connection
such as a T1 line, then you're
killing yourself.
One the biggest complaints
people have when they go
online is the speed when a
site comes up on the screen.
Things that can slow down
a page's loading time can
be the amount of graphics
you have on your site.
These include all flash,
moving type or animation,
or even videos.
And of course ads - they can
start to become more of a
drawback to your site loading
fast.
I'm sure you've probably
visited sites where the
ads come up first and the
actual content of the site
comes up much later.
For many people this is already
a signal for them to switch to
another site.
Not something you want them
to do.
And speaking of animations,
yes animated icons, scrolling
text and the like can be an
effective way to not only liven
up your site but also to attract
attention to your site.
That being said, just because
you can put it in doesn't mean
you should.
Or if you do put it in, don't
go overboard.
And by overboard I mean
a page full of those moving,
flashing, and twirling things
that make your page look
more like a tribute to modern
art than a page that is sharing
some information or selling
something.
Basically, you yourself are
distracting your own
customers from what you
want them to do.
The same thing when it comes
to putting music on your site.
If anything else remember this:
we don't all have the same
taste in music.
Nothing will drive away a
customer more than going
to a site and loud music
automatically starts to play.
And it plays even before
anything else loads up.
And it's music that they
don't even like.
Let me ask you this, if you
were the customer will you
be staying on that page or
moving on?
More than likely you will
be moving on.
Are you starting to get the
picture?
And when going for colors,
please be logical.
A dark blue background, while
nice to look at, is absolutely
worthless when your text is
purple.
Dark on dark doesn't really
work if your customers won't
be able to read anything on
your site.
And since links are important
make sure all your links work
as they are supposed to.
And this doesn't matter
whether it is an external,
internal, or bookmark link.
And finally, if you haven't
finished everything on your
website yet; if you have pages
that are still under construction,
then by all means DO NOT go
live with your site first and finish
everything later.
All it takes is one visit from a
potential customer and they
will not return.
After all, why should they
return to a site that is not
yet finished, even if you
already have.
First impressions do count.
Making your website work the
way you want it to will take a
lot of work and patience on
your end.
